January 22, 2002 Mr. Bruce Lande 4754 Lawsher Drive Syracuse, New York 13215 Mr. Lande: Thank you for contacting me to express your support for stem cell research. I want you to know that I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion. Stem cells are widely considered to hold enormous promise in treating a range of human diseases from Parkinson's disease to Lou Gehrig's disease to diabetes. One important use of the cells would be for the development of tissue transplanting therapies – for example, to grow cells to replace damaged heart tissue, neurons for use in treating Parkinson's or cartilage-forming cells to treat arthritis. I also support the National Institutes of Health in its recognition that this type of research requires "stringent oversight...beyond the traditional rigorous NIH scientific peer review process." The NIH and the National Bioethics Advisory Commission will work together to develop stem cell specific guidelines to ensure that ethical standards are met throughout the research process. Again, thank you for contacting me. If I may be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely,
Charles E. Schumer United States Senator CES/e ---- END OF NOTES ----
