"As a practicing physician for over fifty years, I have reached three basic conclusions as to the cause and cure of disease. This book is about those conclusions.

The first is that the primary cause of disease is not germs. Rather, I believe that disease is caused by a toxemia which results in cellular impairment and breakdown, thus paving the way for the multiplication and onslaught of germs.
My second conclusion is that in almost all cases the use of drugs in treating patients is harmful. Drugs often cause serious side effects, and sometimes even create new diseases. The dubious benefits they afford the patient are at best temporary. Yet the number of drugs on the market increases geometrically every year as each chemical firm develops its own variation of the compounds. The physician is indeed rare who can be completely aware of the potential danger from the side effects of all of these drugs.

My third conclusion is that disease can be cured through the proper use of correct foods. This Statement may sound deceptively simple, but I have arrived at it only after intensive study of a highly complex subject: colloid and endocrine chemistry.

My conclusions are based on experimental and observational results, gathered through years of successfully treating patients. Occasionally I have resorted to the use of drugs in emergency situations, but those times have been rare. Instead, I have sought to prescribe for my patients' illnesses antidotes which Nature has placed at their disposal."

"old medical truism--that nature does the real healing, utilizing the natural defenses of the body. Under the proper conditions nature, if given the opportunity, is always the greatest healer. It is the physician's role to assist in this healing-to co-operate with nature's forces; to play a supporting role instead of star of the show. Nature does not follow Madison Avenue's "Feel Better Faster" but takes her time, slowly, as a tree grows, a little more each day. Nature never rushes to get a sick man or beast on his feet; she also demands a slow and steady convalescence. Sick animals rest or sleep and refuse all food until nature has healed them.

Isn't it proper, then, to expect that nature can do the same thing for the sick human if only she is given the opportunity?

Because I believe this so deeply, I have been in disagreement with doctors who stuff the sick, exhausted man with powerful toxic drugs and then are forced to use other drugs to "remedy the remedy," as it were. Instead I "fast" the patient on simple vegetable broths or diluted fruit juices in order to give the exhausted body organs an opportunity to discharge their waste products and heal themselves."

Minds are like parachutes. They only function when they are open.
Sir James Dewar, Scientist (1877-1925)

"When I was first diagnosed, I searched and searched for information about liver cancer but could find nothing. It was very frustrating to think that I was in this all by myself. I wanted to know what caused it, what I could do, etc. etc. etc. Ultimately my doctor at Roswell Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY said 'You won't find the answers you are looking for in a book. You will find them inside yourself and your attitude in dealing with what you have. It really no longer matters what caused your illness - You have it and that's that. It is how you choose to deal with it that matters. ' I decided then and there that I would lick it and my positive attitude has gotten me through 20 years I did not expect to have. I treasure every moment of every day and do my best to brighten the lives of others." Jean Whalen

"One of the key cells in the immune system is the phagocyte, a white blood cell that engulfs and destroys foreign molecules and microorganisms. One type of phagocyte called a macrophage plays a critical role in both antibody-mediated and cell-mediated immunity by signaling other cells of the immune system that foregin antigens are present.  In this signaling role, macrophages are known as antigen-presenting cells. All phagocytes arise from stem cells, which are mitotically (relating to cell division process) active cells found in bone marrow.  Mature phagocytes have the ability to leave the circulatory system by squeezing through capillary walls to enter inflamed or damaged tissues to identify, engulf and destroy antigens. "

As AA sufferers, our cell marking process malfunctions, and our phagocytes destroy our platelets and other blood cells before they can enter the blood stream.

One Hundred Days, My Unexpected Journey from Doctor to Patient by Dr. David Biro ISBN 0-375-40715-4.

IMHO, anyone who is considering a BMT must read this book that is considered a "success story."

Paraphrased from the summary chapter:

It is now January 1998, almost two years since my transplant and my story is far from over.  I am still waiting for immune system to recover. Typically the immune system reconstitutes itself within a year.  However, a few patients are still immuno-compromised four years after a transplant. His counts continued to drop and they kept prescribing more and more medications on top of the ones he had already been taking.

As Dr. Biro says, " I have been exposed to damaging levels of radiation and chemotherapy, which can result in complications down the road-cataracts, thyroid diseaes, secondary cancers. Cure? Depends on what you mean, who you ask. In my book, no."

He also recounts stories of patients who were not so lucky - Several died, others have serious side effects - One has been hospitalized eight times after the BMT with two open lung biopsies, countless scans and an near fatabl bout with chicken pox.  Believe it or not, this patient is considered one of the "cured!"

"Many others have not been so "lucky." Some have watched their anemias and leukemias return with a vengeance. Many have died - He recounts the story of a girl who went through the whole thing, then had a slight cough that turned out to be CMV pneumonia and she died within a week.

If this is what you get from a BMT, I'll pass, thank you very much!

"All vertebrates possess primary barriers, such as the skin and mucosal surfaces, that prevent the invasion of most foreign organisms.  Thus, the immune system per se is really a second line of defense that has evolved in multi-cellular differentiated organisms. Once past these walls, invaders drain into a web of lymphatics. The lymphatic system...underlies the skin extensively and premeates the body. Thin walled lymphatic vessels carry foreign matter into larger lymphatics and ultimately, via the thoracic duct, into the bloodstream. Interposed along this network of lymphatics are the lymph nodes, into which foreign materials also flow are filtered out an in which the immune responses initiated.  More importantly, lymphocytes circulate via the lymphatics and into the nodes, such that antigens appearing in the lymph node are exposed to a variety of circulating antigen specific lymphocytes in a relatively brief time."

(Italics and parenthetical comments are mine)

"When anecdotal reports about a drug or a treatment mount, they may get the attention of a researcher or twoe.  With a little funding, the researcher is able to conduct an open study. (Pharmaceutical companies will not let that happen if they don't see a way to make money and how are they going to make money on us choosing to live a healthier life style and reduce the intake of drugs) and then a double blind, placebo-controlled study to prove or disprove the effectiveness of the treatment or drug. If the treatment or drug is proved to be effective and safe by the standards of the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Federal Drub Administration (FDA), it is moved off the alternative list and onto the conventional list.  It is somewhat funny to realize that every accepted therapy of today was, at some point in history, an alternative therapy.

"The moment you arrived on this Earth, you were given a body in which to house your spiritual essence. The real "you" is stored inside this body. The purpose of this body is to act as the buffer between you and the outside world. If you are open to all the lessons and gifts your body has to offer you, it can impart to you valuable bits of wisdom and grace that will guide you along your path. The body you are give will be yours for the duration of your time here.  Love it or hate it, accept it or reject it, it is the only one you will receive in this lifetime. Since there is no-refund, no-exchange policy, it is essential, that you transform your body into a beloved partner and lifelong ally, as the relationship between you and your body is the most fundamental and important relationship of your lifetime."

When things go wrong as they sometimes will.
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill.
When funds are low and the debts are high.
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit.
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As everyone of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about.
When he might have won had he stuck it out:
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems so far:
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

From P,5, of "What Doctors Don't Tell You" by Lynne McTaggart ISBN 0-380-79607-4

"One glance at the statistics shows that, except in the case of getting run over or needing an emergency cesarean, orthodox Western medicine not only won't cure you but may leave you worse off than you were before. In fact, these days, scientific medicine itself is responsible for a good percentage of disease.  If you're in a hospital, there's a one in six chance that you laded there because of some modern medical treatment gone wrong. Once you get there, your chances are one in six of dying in the hospital or suffering some injury while you're there.  Since half this risk is caused by a doctor's or hospital's error, you're got an 8 percent chance of being killed or injured by the staff. 5 If we extrapolate the results of a 1984 study, over one million Americans are being injured in the hospital every year, and 180,000 die as a result. 6 To put the magnitude of the problem in perspective, if you live in the United States, where about 40,000 people are shot dad every year, you are nevertheless three times more likely to be killed by a doctor than by a gun.7

This appalling track record has nothing to with incompetence or lack of dedication.  Most doctors are extremely well intended, and probably a majority are competent in what they've been taught.

The problem is not the carpenter, but his tools.  The fact is that medicine is not a science, or even an art.  Many of your doctor's arsenal of treatments don't work - indeed have never been proven to work, let alone to be safe.  It is a false science, built upon conjuring tricks, supposition, and blind preconception, where so-called scientific method is a vast amount of stumbling in the dark."

Each footnote cites a reputable source.

I respectfully submit that ATG, BMT and Cyclosporine fit this quote directly and for the record, I am not against doctors, but I am against pharmaceutical companies.  I am convinced that most doctors mean well and I know for a fact that at least one of them saved my life in a critical care situation. I also believe that prescription medicine has become far too prevalent and alternative treatments should be considered.

"The Road to Immunity" Kenneth Bock, M.D. ISBN 0-671-54507-8 P,4,

"The typical modern lifestyle ravages the immune system.  There are many reasons why.  Every day we are exposed to all kinds of pollutants and toxins, including smoke, chemicals, and heavy metals. We eat too much bad food and not enough good food.  We are casual about what we put into our bodies - including over the counter drugs, and recreational drugs - and we are often stressed, lonely, isolate, insecure and fearful. The immune system is rugged enough that we can get by under these conditions for years, even decades. However, all these factors eventually take a heavy toll. Insult piles up upon injury until one day we get sick."

"Today the field of alternative medicine is like a wild jungle, full of unsubstantiated claims, junk science, and marketing hype.

This website is dedicated to providing referenced, scientific data on a variety of holistic and alternative medicine topics, focusing on universal principles, sound physiology, and the undiluted healing powers of the body itself.

Healers of the past have already solved most health problems of today. Unfortunately, most of their work died with them. Their voices have been muted by the din of a thousand self-proclaimed experts and Magic Bullet salesmen. This website seeks to draw from the forgotten wisdom of the past, and to honor its simplicity.

Despite what you may hear, our health is deteriorating year by year. The rates of all degenerative diseases in this country are increasing. We have more asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression, arthritis, allergies, digestive disorders, and obesity than ever before in history. At the same time we spend more and more money each year for "Health Care." We have more doctors and more drugs than any civilization in history. But it's not working.

What's not working is the underlying idea. If doctors and drugs could give us better health, we'd already be better. That is why the field of holistic and alternative medicine is growing so fast - it's survival.

The healthiest people in human history were groups who were geographically isolated from "civilization." These people had no specialists, no HMOs, no prescription drugs, and no immense hospitals. They were never subverted with the idea that the responsibility for their own health lay outside themselves. Except in the cases of traumatic injury, for most of their lives they looked to the body's inner wisdom, and trusted only that. And it worked - they had beautiful teeth, strong bones, and very little degenerative disease.

Today it's almost as though our ancestors are trying to speak to us. The searching, jumbled mess we find in the field of today's Alternative Medicine has a real, valid, vital, underlying power source: the impulse to give the body time to heal itself, to let it try and put the steps of the healing process together all by itself, without potent, unproven interventions - in short, to listen first to interventions - in short, to listen first to

The Number Three Cause of Death in the U.S.? Doctors - says the authoritative Journal of the American Medical Association. Learn how you can avoid becoming one of their statistics.

"This information is a follow up of the Institute of Medicine report which hit the papers in December of last year, but the data was hard to reference as it was not in peer-reviewed journal. Now it is published in JAMA which is the most widely circulated medical periodical in the world.

The author is Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health and she desribes how the US health care system may contribute to poor health.

ALL THESE ARE DEATHS PER YEAR:

12,000 -- unnecessary surgery 8 7,000 -- medication errors in hospitals 9 20,000 -- other errors in hospitals 10 80,000 -- infections in hospitals 10 106,000 -- non-error, negative effects of drugs 2 These total to 250,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes!! What does the word iatrogenic mean? This term is defined as induced in a patient by a physician's activity, manner, or therapy. Used especially of a complication of treatment.

Wisdom Nuggets

If I could give everyone in the world just one piece of wisdom, it would be this:

"Build yourself a strong network of true friends for the time that you will be in need, because that time will come."

I truly had not realized how blessed I was until my ship starting sinking and I was not at the wheel.  I never consciously set about building this network but I guess I had been enough of a friend to enough people at one time or another in my life that when I found myself in real trouble, the response was truly overwhelming.  From Jack and Liz showing up within minutes of learning of my situation to Mark and Karen hosting a golf tournament in my honor, Melissa and Mike rescuing what was left of our failing business and Kathy and Laverne being a constant source of strength, I will never forget the kindness and generosity of so many friends, relatives and complete strangers.
